AY2024/25 Programme Choice and Transfer Policy

This policy defines the general principles and relevant requirements of Programme Choice and Programme Transfer for Academic Year 2024/25. The Programme Choice Week falls in the first half of Stage 1 Semester 2, whilst any needs for Programme Transfer will be considered during the summer in 2025.

Programme Choice

1) Stage 1 students who are not admitted directly to a programme of study, particularly Chinese Mainland students who are admitted into a subject group, shall make their programme choice during the first half of Semester 2 of Stage 1. Students who have already been admitted into a programme of study during the admission stage will normally not participate in the Stage 1 programme choice process.

2) The admission criteria of each programme vary between schools and programmes, which typically include the following:

a) The choosing and taking of prerequisite modules;

b) One or more aptitude/selection processes, which may include reviews of portfolios, interviews and/or other selection process defined by the programme;

c) Level of academic achievements as specified in Clause 4.

3) In preparation for their programme choice in Semester 2, students should choose modules that are to be taken in Semester(s) 1 and/or 2 in Stage 1 and serve as the admission prerequisite modules for their intended programmes before the start of Semester 1 as per University arrangements.

a) Mathematics prerequisite modules are detailed in Appendix 1.

b) Language prerequisite modules for admission to:

International Business with a Language: at least 2 stages of a language other than English in Stage 1 (e.g. SPA001+SPA002, or JPL001+JPL002, or CLT001+CLT002, or CLT021);

Translation and Interpreting: For international students and Taiwan/Hongkong/Macao students whose native language is not Chinese, an HSK level 6 or the pass of the aptitude test arranged by the Department of Translation and Interpreting is required.

c) Other optional modules for admission to:

Architecture: taking either ARC001 or DES003 in Semester 1

4) Admission to the following programmes is subject to average marks of a specific module or a combination of modules as detailed below.

a) School of Advanced Technology

i) Computer Science and Technology, Digital Media Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Information and Computing Science, Mechatronics and Robotic Systems, and Telecommunications Engineering: subject to the average mark of Calculus and the Linear Algebra modules taken in Semester 1.

b) International Business School Suzhou

i) Accounting, Economics, and Economics and Finance: subject to the mark of the Calculus module taken in Semester 1.

ii) Business Administration, Human Resource Management and Marketing: subject to the average mark of all modules taken in Semester 1 that have final marks.

iii) Information Management and Information Systems: subject to the average mark of Calculus and Linear Algebra modules taken in Semester 1.

c) School of Science

i) Biological Sciences: subject to the mark of the Calculus module taken in Semester 1.

d) School of Mathematics and Physics

i) Financial Mathematics: subject to the average mark of the specific Linear Algebra module (MTH017) and the specific Calculus module (MTH029/023) taken in Semester 1.
ii) Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Science and Biomedical Statistics: subject to the average mark of the Linear Algebra module and Calculus module taken in Semester 1.

e) School of Humanities and Social Sciences

i) English and Communication Studies, Media and Communication Studies, and International Relations: subject to the average mark of all modules taken in Semester 1 that have final marks.

5) The Programme Choice Week event runs in Semester 2 and during that period, students are required to make no more than three choices from the programmes for which they have met the admission criterion a) and b) listed in Clause 2 of this policy, and list their programme choices in order of preference in the programme choice system.

6) The University will make sure that each student will be eventually admitted into a programme of study through the Programme Choice process.


Programme Transfer

7) Stage 1 Taiwan, Hongkong, Macau and International new entrants, who have been directly admitted into a programme of study at the admission stage, may participate in the Programme Choice Week if they wish to change their programme.

8) Students who have progressed to Stage 2 or later stages of study, including those who have been directly admitted into Stage 2, are not normally allowed to change their programmes unless under very exceptional circumstances where they are experiencing difficulties in satisfying the requirements of the current programme as detailed in Clauses 3c and 4q of the Framework for Undergraduate Degree Programmes.

9) Programme transfer cases will be considered by Schools as per students’ academic profile and suitability of the applicant against all criteria set in the Programme Choice stage as outlined in Clause 2 of this policy.

10) Requests and consultations for programme transfer under Clause 9 must be made by the student as early as possible and the approval from Programme Directors of both the target programme and the current programme must be sought in advance of the next academic year. After the commencement of the first day of Week 1 of Semester 1 of the new academic year, requests for programme transfer are not normally considered.

 

APPENDIX 1: TABLE OF MATHEMATICS PREREQUISITE MODULES OF PROGRAMMES (2024/25)

Note:
The offering in Mathematics may vary in content, level and credit hours for different subject groups/programmes, and for different types of students. Unless specified in the above table, the prerequisites may refer to a range of modules with similar contents.

- Calculus refers to any one module from MTH013 Calculus for Science and Engineering, MTH019 Calculus for Business, MTH023 Introductory Calculus II, MTH029 Calculus (Mathematical Sciences), or the combination of MTH025 Pre-Calculus and MTH027 Introductory Calculus I.

- Multivariable Calculus refers to any one module from MTH004 Multivariable Calculus (Business and Arts), MTH008 Multivariable Calculus (Science and Engineering), MTH002 Multivariable Calculus and Statistics and MTH014 Multivariable Calculus (Architecture).

- Linear Algebra refers to any one module from MTH007 Linear Algebra, MTH015 Introductory Linear Algebra, and MTH017 Linear Algebra for Mathematical Science.
